In 1996 the
International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that the threat or use of
nuclear weapons is generally illegal and that there is an obligation to
eliminate these weapons. New Zealand lawyers and activists were
instrumental in this ruling. Aotearoa Lawyers for Peace (ALP) is now
working on a follow-up case in the ICJ on implementation of the earlier
decision.
In 2000, ALP arranged
a speaking tour for Judge Weeramantry, former Vice-President of the
World Court. The judge spoke to the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, a
United Nations Conference and capacity crowds in Wellington and
Christchurch.
ALP member
Alyn Ware, along with Israeli-American Merav Datan, coordinated the
drafting of a Model Nuclear Weapons Convention (NWC). This has now been
circulated by the United Nations as a discussion document. ALP is also
active in promoting negotiations for a NWC at the United Nations and
amongst governments.
ALP
members Alan Webb and Alyn Ware participated in the negotiations in New
York and Rome to establish and International Criminal Court (ICC). ALP
has helped Pacific governments in the ratification process.
ALP
Chairperson Simon Reeves has worked with the Auckland District Law
Society Library to establish the Harold Evans Memorial Collection on
nuclear weapons and law. Justice Evans pioneered the World Court
Project and other disarmament initiatives.
